A modern ECU calibration studio

Tuning Editor is a free Windows application for professionals and enthusiasts who work with engine control unit (ECU) calibration data. It brings map editing, hex editing, a suite of tuning calculators and convenient online services together in a single, clean interface.

The application is intended for vehicles used in motorsport or off-road activities on closed or private circuits, in compliance with the regulations of the country where it is used. MTX Electronics disclaims all liability for any use that does not comply with applicable laws.

Tuning Editor is free to use.

Download it below and start working with your calibration files right away.

Features

Tuning Editor packs a full calibration toolkit into a single MDI workspace - the hex editor, file editor, 2D/3D map editor, collection panel and map list can all be open at once.

Editors and workspace

- 2D and 3D map editor - edit a calibration as a table, a 2D plot or an interactive 3D surface, all driven by the same model, with a perceptual heat gradient, reference/diff overlays and paired-editor synchronisation.

- Hex editor - raw byte view and editing of any binary section, with a compact file-density strip.

- 2D file editor - view a whole binary as a single numeric trace in your chosen data type and endianness.

- Scaling-aware copy and paste - move cells between editors carrying both raw and physical values, so unit or formula mismatches are detected.

- Live cell overlay - highlight the cells in use across the table, 2D plot and 3D surface simultaneously.

- Catalog-fed metadata - vehicle, ECU and engine fields offer editable dropdowns sourced from the online catalog.

File formats and conversion

- Multi-format ROM I/O - read and write Intel HEX, Motorola S-Record (S19) and raw BIN, with automatic format detection.

- A2L / ASAP2 import - parse symbol files into maps with axis bindings, scaling formulas and automatic section classification; threaded so even very large A2L files stay responsive.

- Map pack import and export - share calibrations across binaries using multiple map-pack schema (mtxPack, JSON, CSV).

Secure, self-healing project files

- Collections - one collection bundles the original read plus multiple tuned versions of each ECU section, together with map descriptors, map packs and notes.

- mtxCol format - the whole collection is encrypted with authenticated AES-256 and wrapped in a self-healing error-correction layer that repairs localised corruption and truncation, with an optional .rec parity sidecar.

- Password ring - portable, with fingerprint-based auto-open and optional per-entry and envelope passwords.

Engineering calculators

- Unit conversions - pressure, flow, torque and temperature.

- Turbo sizing - mass-flow, pressure and temperature math, with a companion plot.

- Mechanical - engine geometry, compression ratio (forward and reverse) and piston dynamics.

- Airflow estimation - VE-based estimator with plot.

- Fuel estimation - injector duty, pulse width and BSFC, with plot.

- Cam tools - a cam-profile calculator (LSA, ICL, duration) and a cam analyzer for lift, velocity and acceleration.

- Linear extrapolation - extend maps to higher values such as injection duration or boost pressure.

Log analysis

- Log analyzer - import CSV/TSV/MSL logs with separator and decimal auto-detection, plot time-series channels, review per-channel statistics and work with several logs in tabs.

- Import wizard and presets - a guided importer plus reusable presets, so re-importing the same scan tool exports becomes one click.

- Log replay - step a log through your map editors and watch the operating cells light up live, with the axes following.

Comparison and similarity

- File comparison - quickly tell whether two files differ.

- Find similar files - locate similar ROMs in local folders, or against the online archive.

Online services (optional)

- Original file database - sign in to find files online and browse or search the shared archive by vehicle and ECU, then save or import the results.

- AutoTune - submit a stock read through a catalog-driven form, track jobs in the background with notifications, purchase (subscription-aware), download the tuned file as a new version and rate the result.

Checksums and detection

- Checksum view - a per-block checksum table (algorithm, region, stored vs computed, valid/enforced) with ECU identity and one-click rescan; corrections are applied automatically when you export the binary.

Extensibility

- Plugins - extend the application with checksum/detection plugins, UI/extension plugins (new menu commands, undoable map edits and live overlays) and import/export plugins for additional file formats.

- External tools - launch your own utilities with automatic placeholder substitution, such as the active file path.

- Editable presets - section names, functions, ECU systems, engine types and emission standards are all user-editable lists.

Application

- Theming - Light, Dark or System.

- Multi-language - English and Italian, extensible.

Installation

Installation is quick and straightforward:

1. Run the downloaded installer and accept the license agreement.

2. If prompted, allow the installer to make changes - administrator rights are required to install for all users.

3. The installer creates Start menu (and optional desktop) shortcuts and associates mtxCol files with the application.

4. If the required Microsoft Visual C++ runtime is not already present, the installer adds it automatically.

When setup completes you can launch Tuning Editor immediately.

License Agreement

Tuning Editor is proprietary software, provided free of charge for use under its End-User License Agreement. You may install and use it at no cost, and redistribute the complete, unmodified installer.

By installing or using the software you agree to the terms of the license agreement. If you do not accept them, you may not install or use the software.

The application includes third-party open-source components (such as the Qt framework, used under the GNU LGPL v3) which remain under their own licenses; the corresponding notices are installed together with the application.

The software is provided AS IS, without warranty of any kind.

Technical Support

Support is provided for IT and software-related matters only (for example installation help, how-to questions and PC compatibility).

If you encounter a problem you can reach us at info@mtx-automotive.com. For an issue with a specific file, use the application's built-in Send to support option so our staff can review it.

Software Updates

Updates to Tuning Editor are free. New versions are published on this page - simply download the latest installer and run it over your existing installation to update.

We recommend checking back periodically for the newest release.
